Types of Asphalt Shingles We Install
Not all asphalt shingles are created equal. Big Dog Roofing works with the best materials available for Fort Wayne's demanding climate:
Architectural (Dimensional) Shingles. Our most recommended option. Architectural shingles are thicker, more durable, and more attractive than basic 3-tab shingles. They create a dimensional, textured look on your roof and carry 25 to 30 year warranties. GAF Timberline HDZ is our go-to choice — it's rated for 130 mph winds and carries the GAF WindProven limited warranty when installed by a certified contractor.
3-Tab Shingles. The traditional flat-profile shingle. While less expensive, 3-tab shingles only last 15 to 20 years, offer less wind resistance, and have a thinner profile. We recommend these primarily for budget-sensitive projects on rental properties or garages.
Designer and Premium Shingles. For homeowners who want the look of slate or cedar shake without the cost and maintenance, premium shingles deliver dramatic curb appeal with the durability of modern asphalt engineering. These carry enhanced warranties and add significant aesthetic value.
Why We Recommend GAF Timberline HDZ for Fort Wayne Homes
After installing hundreds of roofs across Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana, we've found that GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles deliver the best combination of performance, durability, and value for our climate. Here's why:
130 mph wind rating. Fort Wayne experiences straight-line winds from severe thunderstorms that can exceed 70 mph. Timberline HDZ shingles are rated to withstand sustained winds of 130 mph — well above what Indiana storms typically produce.
StainGuard Plus algae protection. Indiana's humidity promotes algae growth on roofing surfaces, causing ugly dark streaks. GAF's StainGuard Plus technology inhibits algae growth for 25 years, keeping your roof looking clean longer.
LayerLock technology. This proprietary feature mechanically fuses the shingle layers together during installation, creating the industry's widest nailing zone and the strongest bond against wind uplift.
Strong warranty program. When installed according to GAF specifications, Timberline HDZ qualifies for enhanced warranty coverage that includes both material defects and wind damage. Big Dog Roofing follows GAF installation requirements on every project.
The Big Dog Shingle Roof Installation Process
1
Complete Tear-Off
We remove all existing roofing materials down to the bare decking. No roofing over old layers — we want to inspect every square inch of your deck for damage.
2
Deck Inspection & Repair
We inspect the entire deck surface and replace any rotted, soft, or damaged plywood before installing new roofing. Every replacement is documented with photos.
3
Underlayment & Protection
We install synthetic underlayment across the full roof, ice and water shield along eaves and valleys, new drip edge, and proper flashing at all penetrations and transitions.
4
Shingle Installation
Shingles are installed according to manufacturer specifications with six-nail patterns, proper offset, and attention to every detail. Ridge vents and caps are installed last for a clean finish.
